The story of the DOMINOS project started in 2021 when the world began to become aware of the post-pandemic challenges of Covid-19. The observation was that the world became digitalised within a few months and that the academic community faced these new practices for which it was poorly prepared. French health educators then thought it would be worthwhile to go beyond the implementation of online teaching by digitising in-person activities that would allow students to prepare for and become familiar with the exams they would face. It was in this context that Université Paris Cité partnered, from 2022 to 2024, with five European universities to work on these innovative teaching methods.

The first part of the DOMINOS project was a success, with no fewer than 500 students from around the world participating in these digital activities. The second part of DOMINOS aims to build upon what DOMINOS 1 achieved by adding 200 additional eOSCE stations in various fields (medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, midwifery, nursing sciences, etc.) and 40 serious game scenarios. This part of the project also aspires to introduce global health through a MOOC aimed at students, healthcare professionals, and a wider audience.

DOMINOS 2 will take place starting on 1 January 2025 and will end on 30 December 2027. The partners are the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Medical University of Warsaw (Poland), University of Aarhus (Denmark) and Université Paris Cité (France) as coordinator. The DOMINOS 2 Consortium still constitutes the External Committee.

DOMINOS 2 is an innovative and didactic project. We aim to propose new content for health studies through participation in the digitalisation of higher education and society issues. We consider that digital tools are an excellent vector for the standardisation of health studies in Europe and around the world. It allows for the inclusion and ease of access to knowledge, improving worldwide students’ comprehension of their studies and, therefore, the quality of tomorrow’s globalised health.

Thanks to DOMINOS 2, we have the opportunity to use digital tools in health studies. By offering a wide range of online OSCEs and serious games, we aim to boost students’ confidence in their academic careers thanks to training that is freely accessible. We also want to participate in the development of the concept of Global Health, a crucial issue for Europe in the coming decades, by providing information to a broad public to contribute to the practical world changes that await people.

DOMINOS 2 will be composed of several exciting results. Digital OSCEs and serious games libraries will be freely accessible through a dedicated platform. The Global Health MOOC will give extensive access to in-depth knowledge about the recent notion of Global Health. A blueprint on how to write serious game scenarios will be edited and made available to other organisations so that they implement these innovative tools as an extracurricular activity in health studies.

A project such as DOMINOS requires a robust and well-structured organisational framework. For this reason, project activities are organised into four work packages, each corresponding to a specific thematic area, including Asynchronous and Synchronous Training. Every healthcare professional involved in the project is assigned to at least one work package. The following sections present the objectives, key activities, and expected deliverables of each work package.

WP1 focuses on ensuring the effective, transparent, and timely implementation of the project in line with its objectives, work plan, and contractual obligations. WP1 provides the overall coordination and monitoring framework, guaranteeing that all project activities are delivered with high quality, within the agreed timeframe, and in compliance with European Union requirements.

WP1 is essential to the success of the project, as it ensures coherence across all work packages and provides a stable management framework. By monitoring progress and supporting partners, WP1 enables the project to deliver meaningful and sustainable results at European level.

WP1 is led by Dr. Donia Bouzid, Coordinator of the DOMINOS Project and A&E doctor at Bichat Hospital and Geoffroy Decorsier, Project Manager.

The main objectives of WP1 are to:

  • Ensure smooth coordination among project partners
  • Monitor progress against planned activities, milestones, and deliverables
  • Identify risks at an early stage and implement corrective measures
  • Ensure compliance with contractual, administrative, and financial rules
  • Maintain high standards of quality throughout the project lifecycle

WP4 includes the following core activities:

  • Project coordination and governance: Establishment of management structures, decision-making procedures, and clear roles and responsibilities among partners.
  • Progress monitoring and reporting: Continuous monitoring of activities and deliverables, preparation of internal progress reports, and contribution to official reports submitted to the funding authority.
  • Quality assurance: Implementation of quality control mechanisms to ensure that outputs meet agreed standards and project objectives.
  • Risk management: Identification, assessment, and mitigation of potential risks that may affect project implementation.
  • Communication and partner support: Facilitation of regular communication between partners and provision of guidance to support effective implementation of tasks.

WP4 is expected to deliver the following results:

  • Efficient and coordinated project implementation
  • Timely delivery of milestones and deliverables
  • High-quality project outputs aligned with objectives
  • Transparent management and accountability
  • Reduced risks and increased project sustainability

WP2 focuses on the development and implementation of online Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) training sessions to support healthcare students and educators across Europe. This work package aims to enhance synchronous learning by providing realistic, interactive, and scalable assessment experiences in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and interprofessional contexts. Through the creation of a comprehensive digital OSCE library and the organisation of online training sessions, WP2 supports both formative and summative assessment while reducing logistical constraints and student stress.

WP2 contributes directly to the project’s overall objectives by strengthening synchronous digital training and assessment in healthcare education. By combining robust pedagogical frameworks with accessible online tools, WP2 supports high-quality learning, promotes innovation in assessment practices, and prepares future healthcare professionals for both clinical practice and digital healthcare environments.

WP2 is led by Dr. Valentine Ferré, Virologist at Bichat Hospital and teacher at Université Paris Cité and Dr. Stephanie Dufek-Kamperis, lecturer at the Department of Clinical Medicine – Børneafdeling, Randers of Aarhus University.

The main objectives of WP2 are to:

  • Develop an extensive online bank of high-quality OSCE scenarios
  • Support healthcare educators in implementing online OSCEs through shared methodologies and training
  • Prepare healthcare students for summative OSCEs in a flexible and inclusive digital environment
  • Integrate global health challenges into clinical assessment scenarios

WP2 includes the following core activities:

  • Development of a digital OSCE library: Creation of a large collection of OSCE stations covering medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and interprofessional situations, including scenarios addressing global health issues such as migrant health, infectious diseases, vaccination, and environmental health.
  • Organisation of large-scale online OSCEs: Implementation of synchronous online OSCE sessions involving hundreds of students, enabling realistic mock examinations and collaborative learning experiences.
  • Formative OSCE training sessions: Delivery of individual and small-group formative OSCEs by appointment, allowing students to receive personalised feedback and targeted support.
  • Capacity building for educators: Organisation of webinars and training sessions for teachers on how to design, implement, and run online OSCEs effectively.

WP2 is expected to deliver the following results:

  • Improved student preparedness for clinical assessments and real-life practice
  • Reduced stress associated with high-stakes examinations through regular training and feedback
  • Enhanced clinical reasoning, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Increased access to high-quality assessment tools for healthcare educators worldwide

WP3 focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of digital serious games to enhance healthcare education across Europe. Led by Université Paris Cité and the University of Ljubljana, this work package aims to expand innovative, flexible, and accessible learning opportunities for healthcare students. By providing an extensive library of serious games, WP3 enables students to engage in experiential learning at their own pace, anytime and anywhere, while strengthening their clinical reasoning, decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

WP3 plays a central role in achieving the project’s objectives by supporting digital transformation in healthcare education. By combining pedagogical innovation with flexible asynchronous learning, WP3 contributes to the development of resilient, digitally skilled, and well-prepared future healthcare professionals.

WP3 is led by Pr. Claudine Wulfman, Head of the Oral Medicine Department of Henri-Mondor Hospital and Dr. Łukasz Szeleszczuk, Professor of Organic and Physical Chemistry at the Medical University of Warsaw.

The main objectives of WP3 are to:

  • Expand the serious games library with a large set of new, high-quality scenarios
  • Support partner institutions in the design and implementation of serious games through a shared methodological blueprint
  • Enhance student learning through structured asynchronous training sessions
  • Promote innovative, immersive, and learner-centred educational practices

WP3 includes the following core activities:

  • Development of serious game scenarios: Creation of new asynchronous training scenarios in Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, covering a wide range of clinical situations and learning objectives.
  • Implementation and technical enhancement: Encoding of scenarios on the Virtual Training System (VTS), including the integration of high-fidelity components to increase realism and learner immersion.
  • Testing and validation sessions: Organisation of test sessions involving large numbers of students to assess usability, learning impact, and teaching effectiveness, and to refine the serious games based on feedback.
  • Capacity building and knowledge sharing: Development of a practical blueprint to support partner organisations in writing, implementing, and using serious games within their curricula.

WP3 is expected to deliver the following results:

  • An expanded library of serious games accessible to healthcare students across Europe
  • Improved student engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention
  • Enhanced preparedness for real-life clinical situations through safe, simulated environments
  • Increased digital literacy and adaptability among healthcare students
  • Strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration between different healthcare disciplines

WP4 aims to strengthen healthcare students’ understanding of global health challenges through the development of an open, inclusive, and accessible digital learning programme. Led by Université Paris Cité and the University of Aarhus, this work package focuses on integrating global health education into healthcare training at European level. WP4 introduces a comprehensive Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Global Health, combining expert-led content, interactive learning, and innovative assessment methods to support lifelong learning and digital education.

WP4 contributes directly to the project’s overarching goals by embedding global health perspectives into healthcare education and supporting the digital transformation of learning. By providing a shared European learning space, WP4 helps prepare future healthcare professionals to address complex global health challenges with competence, responsibility, and a strong sense of European citizenship.

WP4 is led by Dr. Michael Thy, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Bichat Hospital, Pr. Nathan Peiffer-Smadja, Infectious disease specialist at Bichat Hospital, Dr. Lina Khider, Vascular medicine specialist at Georges Pompidou European Hospital, Dr. Claire Hobson, paediatrician at Bichat Hospital and Dr. Konstantinos Kamperis, Professor at the Department of Paediatrics of Aarhus University.

The main objectives of WP4 are to:

  • Develop an open-source digital Global Health curriculum accessible to healthcare students and professionals
  • Increase awareness and understanding of key global health issues, policies, and ethical challenges
  • Promote digital literacy and engagement with online learning environments
  • Foster a sense of European belonging by involving students in a shared Erasmus+ educational initiative

WP4 includes the following core activities:

  • Development of a Global Health MOOC: Design and implementation of six complementary online courses covering major global health themes, delivered by partner institutions and international experts.
  • Production of expert-led digital content: Recording of lectures and webinars addressing global health challenges, social determinants of health, and healthcare inequalities, with content designed to be inclusive and permanently accessible.
  • Webinars and workshops: Organisation of online webinars and local workshops to encourage dialogue, knowledge sharing, and multidisciplinary approaches to global health education.
  • Assessment and certification: Development of Global Health–themed OSCEs and evaluation tools, enabling learners to validate their knowledge and obtain a certificate upon completion of the MOOC.

WP4 is expected to deliver the following results:

  • Increased knowledge and awareness of global health issues among healthcare students
  • Improved access to high-quality, open educational resources across Europe
  • Enhanced engagement with digital and lifelong learning practices
  • Strengthened interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives in healthcare education
  • Greater student involvement in European cooperation and mobility initiatives

This is the DOMINOS emblem, a visual identity that represents not only our project, but also the values, ambitions, and collective commitment that unite us.

An emblem is never just a logo. It is a symbol. It tells a story at a glance. The emblem of DOMINOS reflects our shared objective to support the digitalisation of the world by gathering the best pedagogical specialists in the fields of Health in the European Union, while highlighting the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and openness across borders.

Each element of the emblem has been carefully designed to convey meaning. The emblem is based on the colours of the European Union, reflecting the project’s European dimension and shared values. At its centre stands the Rod of Asclepius, the traditional symbol of the healthcare professions, enhanced with digital elements to represent innovation and digital transformation in health. Ten of the twelve European stars have been retained, symbolising Europe’s unity around healthcare digitalisation and, as an even number, the balance and harmony that underpin our strong and valued partnership. Together, these elements express our commitment to quality, inclusivity, and long-term impact.

This emblem will accompany us throughout the project. It will appear on our digital platforms, educational resources, events, and communications, serving as a shared reference point for partners, students, professionals, and institutions across Europe.

More importantly, it represents the people behind the project: the educators, students, researchers, and professionals who contribute their expertise, creativity, and dedication to making DOMINOS a success.

As we move forward, this emblem will remind us of why we started this journey together and of the responsibility we share to deliver meaningful, sustainable results.
